48th Anniversary of Nixon’s Resignation
The FBI searched Donald Trump’s home, Mar-a-Lago, yesterday, after a Federal judge issued a warrant approving the action.
Also yesterday, The Times reported that Peter Baker and Susan Glasser’s new book includes JCS Chairman Milley’s written but unsent resignation letter; Trump wanted his generals to act like Hitler’s, i.e. be blindly obedient.
Milley got the JCS job by sucking up to Trump, telling him, “I’ll do whatever you want”, a statement he would regret in abundance as among the things Trump wanted was for him to shoot protesters in Lafayette Square.
And speaking of resignation letters, today is the 48th anniversary of Richard Nixon’s resignation after he was caught lying about and covering up a two-bit politically inspired break-in.
Quite a week and it’s only Tuesday; who said August was boring?
How times change, in 1972 Nixon had help from L. Patrick Gray, his FBI chief, in his Watergate cover-up; Gray destroyed documents on Nixon’s behalf, just the help a felonious president needs from the FBI.
Alas, the current director, Christopher Wray, seems to be made of sterner stuff. Former president Trump must be especially piqued that he appointed Wray, the man who executed the warrant in question.
The Justice Department was acting on a complaint from The National Archives regarding Trump’s retention of documents after he left office; delightfully ironic as Trump is ever known as not keeping any written documentation.
Kevin McCarthy, House Republican leader, vowed (threatened?) Attorney General Merrick Garland with investigation if they retake the Congress in the Fall.
This, if you needed it, is more evidence of how far to the right the Republican party has slewed. He dismisses that a judge has found probable cause for the search and attacks the Justice Department, too.
Doesn’t Kevin McCarthy (and his cohort) know that even the legendary conservative and Nixon supporter Barry Goldwater cut that crooked president loose when he continued to lie?
McCarthy is way to the right of Goldwater — right over the edge with the lunatic fringe, a man happy to defend a proven liar and to attack the rule of law along the way.
A tip of the hat to Richard Nixon who had the good sense to slink off in shame, a thought which will never occur to the shameless Trump.
