Shock and dismay is following the revelation that the Trump administration has cancelled in-person training at the National Fire Academy (NFA) as “programs are reviewed to see if they align with Trump’s priorities.”

One fire chief said, “I have no idea why anybody would think that the NFA programs would not align with the administration’s priorities.”

Cluelessness abounds.

The creators of Trump administration priorities look with complete scorn on the idea of “assistance” given to anyone, anywhere at any time.

For them fire protection is the quintessential local activity in which the federal government has absolutely no responsibility or interest. To fail to understand this fact is to dabble in epic ignorance.

EMS, paramedics, firefighters, firetrucks, training, etc., have no place in a federal government administered by Musk and those like him.

Why would the feds collect federal taxes and then give them back to local governments to buy shiny fire trucks and hire firefighters?

In fact, why would the feds fund a “national fire academy?” From their perspective it’s bizarre.

Trump was supported by a wide cross section of the voter population.

They both approve of and support his moves to cut federal government spending.

What they didn’t bargain for was that those cuts would directly affect their lives and well-being.

Trump cuts are hitting volunteers and career firefighters alike and the mayhem is just beginning.

Congressional republicans are whip-sawed as any attempt to defy Trump will result in a primary challenger in their next election.

State legislature republicans are now emboldened to attack labor rights for firefighters and pensions will be next.

As Kevin O’Connor, a firefighter labor lobbyist has said, “elections have consequences.”
