The Tipping Ground

I live about a mile north of the White House in Washington, DC, and near the eastern rim of Rock Creek Park.

In the 19th-century, the heavily forested area was a tipping ground or trash dump used by millionaire homeowners from nearby Massachusetts Avenue.

Over the years, off trail walks have turned up any number of artifacts, mostly glassware and beautiful bits of fine chinaware probably broken during table-clearing or wash up.

A walk in the park

The bottle in the center is from today’s walkabout.

In this neck of the woods, history is everywhere, even underfoot.

Cheers.
