Here in the District of Columbia, a special federal district created by Congress to serve as the capital of the U.S., the President has ordered in a smorgasbord of national guard and federal agents decrying the city as being under criminal siege; it isn’t.
Though it’s the thought that counts, D.C. was already one of the most policed cities anywhere with more cops than you can throw a tuna melt at:
- Metropolitan Police
- Capitol Police
- U.S. Park Police
- Homeland Security Police
- Housing Police
- FBI Police
- Transit Police
- Secret Service Uniformed Division
By the way, serious crimes are down in the city: “homicides are down 32%; robberies are down 39%; armed carjackings are down 53%; assaults with a dangerous weapon are down 27% when compared with 2023 levels, with the District reporting the fewest assaults with dangerous weapons and burglaries in over 30 years”. (US/DOJ)
Still, bad guys do shoot (mostly) bad guys and juveniles seem especially prone to commit crimes as they ride the juvenile justice merry-go-round, offending, being arrested and then sent back to the street as if their mayhem were a catch-and-release fishing tournament.
Serious crime here is often aligned with neighborhoods and time of day. Far southeast and northeast are perennial concerns and happening spots such as the U street corridor, South of DuPont and Georgetown draw the ne’er-do-wells looking for easy prey--quite often idiots with ear buds in and a nose in a smartphone — they have plenty to choose from.
Last week an off-duty Justice Department employee hurled a Subway sandwich at a Customs and Border Patrol officer at 14th and U streets, ironically a location where a little extra policing would normally be welcomed.
Pan Bondi, U.S. Attorney General, fired the “perp”, braying, “Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony.” Serious over-reactions from an administration which pardoned J6 cop killers.
Members of the D.C. National Guard and various federal agents, at least in this case, are pawns in Trump’s game to attack democracy on the streets of America.
Attacking them suggests a lack of discrimination and maturity.
Have your say if you wish but throwing things, even a sandwich, classes you with Trump and his bitches who are bullies plain and simple.
Be better.
