Mayor Walsh and President-elect Kelly

Ed Kelly was sworn in as president-elect of the International Association of Fire Fighters yesterday by Boston Mayor and likely U.S. Secretary of Labor Martin Walsh at a Boston fire station.

Mayor Walsh made it clear in his remarks that Kelly had called him and asked him to do it; make of that what you may.

The commemorative photo bears a striking resemblance to an earlier image of Kelly with another older and more powerful leader who likely came to regret it.

Schaitberger and Kelly

Neither Walsh nor Schaitberger could manage an actual smile and both look a bit like they’d happily be somewhere else while EDZO is looking “pleased as Punch” in both cases.

It is assumed that Kelly chose not to have incoming secretary treasurer Frank Lima or other elected IAFF members appear, a deliberate choice which should be food for thought. Just how serious is Kelly about promoting unity and teamwork? First steps and symbolic actions matter.

Still, best wishes to Ed Kelly even as he chooses to stand alone.
